The IDEAL Writing Process emerged from work over two decades that began with the goal, at first, of helping boys in fourth grade feel more like writers and become more proficient at writing stories and informational texts. After work in co-ed, public, charter and independent schools with students in third grade and up, the process has evolved to include five key steps beginning with sketching and labelling illustrations, making ideas visible first. This PowerPoint highlights each step: ILLUSTRATE; DRAFT; EDIT; ADVISE & REVISE; LURE READERS – as a way to re-think ways to help students become thinking writers, who take time to craft meaningful fictional and non-fiction works.
