The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) comes from the conversations Barbara and I had with educators early on in 2011-12 where they were asked to create learner-centered environments with no idea on how they would do that. Thinking like practitioners, we created the first Stages of PLE to help educators understand that there is a process to move from a traditional classroom to Stage One where it is teacher-centered with learner voice and choice to Stage Two where it is learner-centered to Stage Three where learners are driving their own learning. The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE), version 5 was updated while finishing our book, How to Personalize Learning that was published in the Fall 2016.
