Item description

This lesson describes how Sentence Structure can be used to keep a story more interesting and engaging. I’ve done this lesson many times with 4th/5th/6th grade writers and it has been warmly received. This strategy has been used in ALL of the 24 novels I’ve written and is an effective tool to improve the writer’s narrative voice but can also be used to increase tension and suspense.

Included with this lesson is a link to multiple writing resources as well as a YouTube video of me talking about this lesson for kids.

What you’ll learn:

  • Typical sentence structure problems exhibited by young writers.
  • Strategies on combining sentences to break up the sentence pattern.
  • Strategies on flipping the order of a sentence.
  • How to use sentence length as a tool to emphasize specific ideas/emotions.
  • How to deal with echoing and alliterations in sentences and paragraphs.
